2nd Africa High-Level Forum for South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Development Successfully Hosted in Kampala

The Government of Uganda, through the NPA and other relevant MDAs, successfully organized the 2nd Africa High-Level Forum for South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable Development that took place from 17 to 19 January 2023 at Speke Resort and Conference Center Munyonyo, Kampala – Uganda.

he Africa High-level forum for SSTrC is an annual event organized by APRM. The forum serves as an advocacy tool and a continental platform bringing together African leaders from cooperation agencies and institutions of national governments and other partners to opportunity to exchange views on SSTrC approaches and methodologies. Further, it aims to support horizontal partnerships to address development gaps in Africa which derail the implementation of Agenda 2063.

South-South cooperation represents a form of collaboration between countries of the global south. Early manifestation of this kind of collaboration was embedded in the 1955 Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung alongside the Pan-Africanism ideology promoted by the Organisation of African Unity. Triangular cooperation, on the other hand, has consistently corroborated with traditional partners from the North to support different strategic sectors in countries of the global south.

During the Forum, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda, noted that whereas historically South-to-South Cooperation was needed in the anti-colonial struggle, where countries supported each other to obtain independence, it was now time to address the issue of global affluence. Therefore, cooperation among the global south countries as well as the traditional development partners today should aim to achieve prosperity for all our people, where there is equal gain from working together. He said that by 1960, affluence and prosperity were only in a few countries of Western Europe, North America, United States,
Canada and Japan, among others while the rest of the world was grappling in poverty and that this “PARASITISM” has to stop”.

The 2nd Africa High-level forum for SSTrC is a precursor to the 20th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit which is also going to be hosted by Uganda later this year. It is the 2nd event that Uganda has hosted following approval of the request by the APRM Continental Secretariat and the African Union by the Cabinet of the Republic of Uganda. The first was the 3rd APRM Continental Youth Conference, which was hosted from 4th – 9th July 2022.
